How 'bout Alex and his mother. Because...we know she's crazy and her mental illness made her an incapable parent. But we also know he loves her fiercely - there've been a bunch of throwaway comments over the years to tell us that, like his conversation with Mere when she thought her mother might have liver cancer. Plus, of course, that history of abuse that he wanted so desperately to protect her from. Potentially a truly intriguing relationship to explore, so of course the show will never go there!
